Depression, in depth.
Depression is one of the most common conditions in medicine, and one of the most misunderstood. It is not a single thing. It is a final common pathway that many different routes — biological, psychological, and social — can lead to, which is part of why it can be so hard to explain and so hard to treat.
This site is an attempt to explain it properly, and plainly. It gathers what is actually known about depression — the symptoms and what drives them, how it is diagnosed and told apart from the conditions it mimics, and the full range of treatments, from psychotherapy and medication to newer interventions — and sets it out in clear, evidence-based language, without alarm and without overselling.
It also takes seriously the parts of depression that medicine alone cannot reach: how philosophers, writers, and contemplative traditions have met despair and the question of meaning. Each section below opens with an overview — start wherever your question is.
